Belfast Central Library, since its foundation in 1888, has built up an outstanding collection of rare books, manuscripts and archives which now constitute its Special Collections.

| Collection Highlights |
Collection 1: The majority of these are held in the Fine Book Room. Among this collection is a significant number of early printed books published in Britain before 1700. The subject range of the collection is vast encompassing theology and philosophy: economics, social, political and military history, in addition to literature, science and medicine. For example, the collection contains a copy of Aesop’s Fables published in 1687 and owned by the diarist John Evelyn. Many of these early printed books are rare, especially those in the field of Irish studies. One of the particular strengths of the collection is our early Belfast printed books, of which the Holy Bible printed by James Blow in 1752 is a notable example.
The collection is a formidable research resource into all aspects of regional and Irish history. Many of the books, pamphlets, maps and manuscripts are not held by any other local library or in some cases any other libraries in Ireland. More information on our collections can be found on the website www.rascal.ac.uk.
