At the start of the project, there were twenty two members in the Consortium of Research Libraries in the British Isles (CURL). The libraries that made up the Britain in Print partnership were selected over others in CURL because they had significant collections of pre-1700 British books which were not yet catalogued in electronic form. In addition to the nine CURL member libraries, a further eight major libraries were added to the partnership, taking the total to seventeen.
