Antony & Cleopatra
Britain in Print
Act 1, scene 1 - lines 1 – 56

Question 3.  Antony tells Cleopatra that “everything becomes” her: “to chide, to laugh,/ To weep.” She is one “whose every passion fully strives/ To make itself … fair and admired.”

We shall now examine Cleopatra’s tactics in the opening scene to help us understand how this “wrangling queen” exercises her power over Antony. Match the statements on the left with the quotation that they best describe.
